University College Roosevelt is a Liberal Arts and Sciences, international honors university college of Utrecht University, located in Middelburg, the Netherlands.Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) once said that "we cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can always build our youth for the future." At UCR, we believe that today’s most complex problems can no longer be solved with a mono-disciplinary approach. This is the ‘opening of the mind’ the founding fathers of the Artes Liberales had in mind. Our program allows you to find a bachelor’s program that suits all of your interests. You can construct your own academic program from over 200 courses, tailor-made to your individual interests. In doing so, the program prepares you for a world whose demands and challenges will grow more complex each year, while optimally preparing you for the master’s program or the job of your choice.Our students come from over 50 different countries and live and study together. Discussing challenges of sea level rise, migration, world trade agreements and more, in a classroom with students from a dozen different countries offers an entirely different - and much stronger - context for learning than a less diverse setting would. Apart from a complete semester on exchange, you may do shorter earth science fieldwork in the Eiffel mountains, follow an archaeology workshop in Athens, join an art history excursion to Rome, or work with indigenous peoples in Mexico.Our alumni are scholars, journalists, scientists, medical doctors, entrepreneurs, engineers, and environmentalists; lawyers, musicians, bankers, human rights activists, artists, diplomats, strategic advisers - and more. They stand out through their self-confidence, civic engagement, and sense of opportunity.   Yesterday, Middelburg had the privilege of hosting the prestigious Four Freedoms Awards which recognized individuals and organizations embodying the ideals of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Four Freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.Bellingcat, a research collective, was honored for their efforts in combating fake news and providing accurate information in international conflicts, emphasizing the importance of a well-informed society.Zumretay Arkin received recognition for her advocacy for Uyghur rights, raising awareness about religious suppression and human rights violations in China, and supporting Uyghur refugees globally.Sônia Guajajara, Brazil's first Minister for Indigenous Peoples, was awarded for her lifelong dedication to protecting indigenous lands and rights, addressing issues such as deforestation and climate change affecting indigenous communities.Grace Forrest, founder of Walk Free, was acknowledged for her work in combatting modern slavery globally, advocating for policy changes, transparency in supply chains, and empowering survivors.The awards ceremony, rooted in Roosevelt's vision of universal human rights, aimed to inspire and honor those who champion these ideals, providing a moral compass for societal progress and equality.Congratulations to those who received an award!📷 Photo Credit: Hans Colijn#FourFreedomsAward #HumanRights #FreedomFighters

  Reed Campbell and Emma Derrick, both junior students at Bard College, have been awarded the prestigious 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship for their exceptional achievements in the natural sciences. Reed Campbell, currently on exchange here at University College Roosevelt in the Netherlands, has demonstrated his commitment to research in marine ecology through projects with Dr. Cathy Collins and an REU internship at the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environmental Ocean Sciences. UCR is proud to have Reed conducting his exchange with us. He aspires to pursue a Ph.D. in Marine Ecology, focusing on marine conservation at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
