How do you give directions instructions? ›

Go straight on Main Street. Turn left at the supermarket. Turn right on the next corner. Go past the cinema and you'll find the library.

Usually you would use the location where you are, or where they are starting out from as the original reference point. Then use Landmark, Direction, Distance. Point to or describe the direction, tell them how far, then describe a landmark (way point) to reinforce that they are on the correct path.

For example, start directions with the word “please.” Ask your child to do something in a calm, firm voice with no yelling. Don't state an instruction as a question. For example don't say “Will you go and brush your teeth?” This can be confusing to children. Instead say 'please brush your teeth'.

Keep it simple

Another mistake is giving directions that are too detailed or difficult to understand. Providing too much information or using complex language can overwhelm the recipient, making it difficult for them to follow the directions.

For example, to go to the school from Jordan's house, you would travel from east to west. If you wanted to go on to the post office, you would change direction at the school and then travel from south to north.

The four cardinal directions, in clockwise order, are north, east, south, and west. Starting with north at 0 degrees, east, south, and west are placed at 90-degree intervals. The sun and its passage through the sky are used as a reference point as the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west.
